Public Involvement

There are several opportunities for public involvement during the EA process.

The first opportunity is during the early consultation period, which is the period in which the range of issues and possible alternatives to be addressed in the Environmental Assessment (EA) are identified. Opportunities for public comment on these issues will occur during the early consultation/public informational briefing meeting and the 30-day early consultation comment period.

The second opportunity is through the HEPA early consultation process. Accordingly, the project will seek advise and input from citizen groups and individuals that may be affected. Affected parties will have 30 days to submit comments from the date of the consultation letter.

The third opportunity for public involvement is after the Draft EA is published.

Opportunities for public comment on the Draft EA will occur during the public workshop, early consultation, and during the 30-day comment period on the Draft EA.

A Public Informational Briefing Meeting was held on Wednesday, November 20, 2019 from 5:30pm to 7:30pm HST at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center (1 Cameron Way, Kahului, HI 96732).

Note: Due to comments we received at the public informational briefing meeting, the closure of Haleakala Road has since been changed from a permanent closure to a temporary closure, which is reflected in the document linked above.
